NHPC: Government Sanctions Scheme of Amalgamation Between Lanco Teesta and NHPC

5 months ago Indian Markets 2 Mins Read

The Indian government has recently approved the scheme of amalgamation between Lanco Teesta Hydro Power Limited (LTHPL) and NHPC Limited. This move allows NHPC, a leading hydropower company in India, to fully integrate the 500 MW Teesta-VI hydroelectric project in Sikkim into its operations. NHPC had previously acquired LTHPL through the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in 2019.

The Teesta-VI project, a run-of-the-river project, is expected to generate 2,400 million units of power annually and contribute significantly to meeting the energy demands of the region. The project is estimated to be completed within the next 3.5 years and will involve a total investment of Rs 5,748 crore. This investment will be funded through a debt-equity ratio of 70:30.

The amalgamation is expected to streamline the project’s execution and enhance operational efficiency. It also reinforces the government’s commitment to strengthening the hydropower sector in India and promoting sustainable energy development.

Key Insights:

  • Focus: The news highlights the government’s approval of the merger between NHPC and LTHPL, consolidating NHPC’s ownership and control of the Teesta-VI hydroelectric project.
  • Key Event: The sanction of the amalgamation scheme marks a crucial step in the resolution process of the previously distressed Teesta-VI project.
  • Potential Impact:
    • Positive impact on NHPC: Increased generation capacity and potential for enhanced revenue.
    • Positive impact on the Hydropower Sector: Demonstrates the government’s support for the sector and its potential to attract further investments.
    • Positive impact on Sikkim: Contributes to the state’s power generation capacity and economic development.

Investment Implications:

  • This development is positive for NHPC investors as it adds a significant asset to the company’s portfolio and strengthens its market position.
  • The government’s support for the hydropower sector could attract more investment and boost the performance of related stocks.
  • Investors interested in the renewable energy sector should consider this news when evaluating investment opportunities in hydropower companies.
